Healing is an Individual Process

Healing is an Individual Process

Just like one size does not fit all, in the same way healing is an individual process. Let’s explore what that means and why it’s so important to do what works for you.

Healing is a Time for Choices

Those of us who grew up being abused had our power taken away from us. One of the worst things that could happen is that someone makes you think you have to do these 10 steps and then you’ll be healed from whatever abuse you suffered and live happily ever after.

That’s a lie. It’s just another way to keep you in bondage and take your power. Healing is a time for choices. Not only that, it’s a lifelong process with some seasons being harder than others.

As I stated on the page How to Rewrite Your Life, this is an individual process and what works for me may not work for you or anyone else. What works for you may not work for me. It’s as different as we are different. The important thing is that you have the power to decide.

Healing May Involve Different People and Techniques

Our healing process will likely have seasons where different people help us in different ways. We need to be open to listening to ourselves and not being afraid to try working with different people at different times, or working on our own to heal.

When I had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for 3 years, I worked with a therapist doing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. For that time that was what I needed. After a while I moved to another therapist who did more talk therapy and visualization.

As the years have passed I’ve also worked with:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Brainspotting
  • Visualization
  • Relaxation and mindfulness techniques
  • Guided meditation for future desires of who I want to become
  • Restoring the Foundations (RTF) ministry which breaks unhealthy bonds between the abuser and the abused and breaks generational trauma
  • Personal coaching
  • Modified tapping techniques (TFT and EFTA) from Dr. Henry Grayson’s book Your Power to Heal
  • Actually rewriting past experiences
  • Journaling
  • Support groups like Overeaters Anonymous and Celebrate Recovery

So healing is an individual process with different people and techniques for different seasons in our journey.

Make Your Healing An Individual Process

During the healing journey, you can be mindful of what you need and who you need to see so that you can make your healing an individual process. Don’t be afraid to try something different or seek a different counselor or coach, especially if that person isn’t jiving with you. In addition, people who are abused need to be extra careful not to be abused by those who help them. So if something doesn’t feel right, heed that internal warning. You have choices now and what matters to you is important.
