EFTA to Clear Negative Beliefs

In a previous post, I outlined how to use TFT tapping to clear trauma from your ancestors, parental downloads, or things that happened before you learned language. In this post, I’m going to outline how to use EFTA to clear negative beliefs from trauma or negative experiences after you learned language.

What Is EFTA?

EFTA is a modified tapping technique created by Dr. Henry Grayson in his book Your Power to Heal. Check out this video where I outline EFTA and demonstrate the protocol:

In EFTA you self-muscle test to figure out the negative belief that’s associated with your current issue–in other words the reason why you’re upset. The issue can even be that you’re having a physical issue such as pain or even illness or disease.

EFTA is a process of holding your fingers on certain meridian points and clearing the emotion associated with that point. So next to your eyebrows is for releasing fear. Under the eyes is for anxiety and under the nose on the upper lip is for embarrassment.

What I love about EFTA over regular tapping protocols is that it is incredibly specific and thorough. It goes through every major emotion and clears each one effectively. The emotions are:

  • Fear
  • Anger, resentment, and rage
  • Anxiety
  • Embarrassment
  • Guilt and shame
  • Worry and excessive concern
  • Hurt and sadness

Then it involves really dialing into something that represents pure love to you. I love this part of the protocol because it’s where I usually rewrite the experience using my imagination.

EFTA Protocol Progression

First, you want to self-muscle test and find out what is causing your current trigger or issue. Try to find what the negative belief is and how strong it is on a scale of 0 to 10 or whatever scale works for you.

Deep breathe throughout the following protocol and let your body do whatever else it needs to do to release the pent up energy. See the post How It Feels to Rewrite a Scene for what your body might do. When you feel all energy has released for that spot, you may move on to the next instruction.

Thymus heart rub
Rub your hand in a circular clockwise motion and over the thymus gland which is right under the sternum and between the lungs and repeat the following phrases:

I deeply love and accept myself even if I think I might not deserve to be free of this belief [problem, trauma].


I deeply love and accept myself even if I think it’s not safe to be free of this belief [problem, trauma].


I deeply love and accept myself even if I think I might not be worthy of being free of this belief [problem, trauma].


I deeply love and accept myself even if I’m afraid of letting go of this part of my old identity.

Touching forehead
1. Breathe deeply several times and take one incredibly deep breath as low as you can breathe in.
2. Continuing to breathe deeply, check in with the memory or trauma associated with your current issue.
3. Then find where the feelings are showing up in your body.
4. Have a conscious intent to clear the belief.
Touching eyebrow
Holding your fingers next to one or both eyebrows, say, “I now release all fear related to this belief.”
When you are ready to move on, keep your fingers there and say, I now release all fear of letting go of this belief.”
Touching next to eye
Holding your fingers next to one or both eyes, say, “I now release all anger, resentment, and rage related to this belief.” I added hatred also.
Touching under eye
Holding your fingers under one or both eyes, say, “I now release all anxiety related to this belief.”
When you are ready to move on say, “I now release all anxiety about letting it go.”
Touching upper lip
Holding your fingers on your upper lip, say, “I now release all embarrassment related to this belief.”
Touching under lip
Holding your fingers on your lower lip and chin, say, “I now release all guilt and shame related to this belief.”
Touching 4 inches below armpit
Holding your hand about 4 inches below your armpit, say, “I now release all worry and excessive concern related to this belief.”
When you are ready to move on, keep your hand there and say, “I now release all worry and excessive concern related to letting it go.”
Touching ribs under chest
Holding one or both hands under your chest on your ribs, say, “I now release all hurt and sadness related to this belief.”
Touching right hand to upper left chest
Placing your hand on your upper left chest area near the heart, connect deeply with an image, scene, place, or person that represents pure love to you.
This is also where you might want to rewrite the experience, put closure on it, etc. Let your imagination take over.
Touch Collarbones
Solidify the protocol by touching your collarbone points (which are about 1 inch out and 1 inch down from the knobby parts of the collarbone) and taking 2-3 more deep breaths.

Then retest or check in with yourself to see if you’ve arrived at zero. If not repeat or see if something is ancestral, parental, or preverbal and use the TFT protocol to clear it.

Rewrite the Negative Belief Using EFTA

EFTA is so powerful to clear negative beliefs because not only does it release all the pent up emotion we’ve been storing in our bodies and the physical manifestations of that, it also gives you an opportunity to rewrite the negative belief using your imagination. Check out this EFTA example video I made where I used tapping to clear the belief that when I’m vulnerable I’m unsafe.

When I get to the part where I hold my right hand on my left upper chest and shoulder area, I picture a place where I go with God. I see if he has anything to say to me about what I believed, or if I have anything to say to myself. I might even rewrite the scene in my imagination.

Just the other day I cleared something that made me very upset at a family of origin member. For that one I didn’t go to my God place. I went straight to that family member in my mind and out loud I told her what was what! I told her the truth, I swore some, and I found my power. It was invigorating!

EFTA Works Like a Computer to Rewrite Negative Beliefs

As you use EFTA to clear negative beliefs it’s sort of like rewriting computer code. It replaces old, outdated, unhelpful code with new code that works. The old code was causing you to live in fear, anxiety, embarrassment, worry, guilt, shame, and the like. The new code lets you rewrite that old belief and find the truth about yourself, others and the world, instead of the lies you were led to believe.

You don’t have to live under ancestral trauma, parental downloads, preverbal trauma, or post-verbal trauma. TFT tapping and EFTA are powerful techniques to clear negative beliefs and get out from under the weight of such things.
